The 1992-1996 Ford Escort RS Cosworth redefined Group A rally homologation, becoming the first mass-production road car designed to generate front and rear aerodynamic downforce. Its distinctive double-deck "whale tail" spoiler delivered actual high-speed stability, making it an instant motorsport hero.
Under the louvred hood sits the Cosworth YBT engine, a 2.0-liter (1,993 cc) turbocharged inline-four. Featuring a dual-overhead-cam setup and a large Garrett T35 turbocharger, this powerplant produces 224 horsepower and 224 lb-ft of torque, propelling the hatchback to sixty miles per hour in 5.7 seconds.
The chassis utilizes a permanent four-wheel-drive system with a 34/66 front-to-rear torque split, mated to a five-speed MT75 manual gearbox. Suspension consists of MacPherson struts up front and trailing arms at the rear, delivering exceptional all-weather traction and sharp, predictable handling.
Ford produced just 7,145 units of this homologation special. Highly sought after by modern collectors, it bridged a critical gap in Ford's performance history. It effectively replaced the Sierra RS Cosworth and paved the way for the Focus RS, cementing its status in rally-road lineage.
