The 1989-1994 Nissan 240SX redefined affordable rear-wheel-drive sports cars by offering a balanced 55:45 front-to-rear weight distribution. It became the definitive platform for grassroots drifting and tuner culture, prized for its highly predictable slip angle and responsive chassis feedback.
US-market models initially featured the 2.4-liter SOHC KA24E inline-four, upgraded in 1991 to the dual-overhead-cam KA24DE. This naturally aspirated DOHC powerplant produced 155 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 160 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm, delivering a broad, truck-derived torque curve.
Built on the S13 platform, it utilizes a MacPherson strut front suspension and an innovative multi-link rear setup. Power goes to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. This configuration, combined with a low center of gravity, yields exceptional cornering agility and drift control.
Nissan sold roughly 250,000 S13s in the US. Once common, unmolested examples are now highly prized by collectors. In Nissan's lineage, the S13 generation replaced the angular S12 200SX in 1989, and was eventually succeeded by the rounder, wider S14-generation 240SX for the 1995 model year.
