The 2020-2026 Toyota GR Yaris redefined the modern hot hatch as a genuine World Rally Championship homologation special built from the ground up. Unlike standard commuter hatchbacks, this bespoke three-door utilizes a carbon-fiber polymer roof and aluminum panels to minimize mass, delivering high all-weather grip and agility on challenging B-roads.
Under the hood lies the G16E-GTS engine, a motorsport-derived 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder unit. As the world's most powerful production three-cylinder at launch, it produces 261 metric horsepower (257 bhp) and 360 Newton-meters of torque. This compact powerplant utilizes multi-oil jet piston cooling and large-diameter exhaust valves to sustain high boost pressures safely.
The hybrid chassis pairs a GA-B front with a GA-C rear, allowing for double-wishbone rear suspension and the GR-Four all-wheel-drive system. Power flows through a six-speed manual transmission to optional front and rear Torsen limited-slip differentials. This drivetrain can split torque up to 30:70 rearwards, delivering precise mid-corner adjustability.
With over 40,000 units built, this hatchback has become highly sought after by active track-day drivers and collectors. Within Toyota's performance lineage, it replaced the supercharged Yaris GRMN. As emission regulations tighten, no direct petrol successor is planned, ensuring this model remains the peak of Toyota's rally-bred era.
