The 2017-2022 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 redefined midsize off-road performance by bringing Formula 1-derived Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers to a production truck. This hardware delivered unmatched high-speed desert-running capability and low-speed rock crawling precision straight from the factory.
Buyers chose between two powerplants. The standard LGZ 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V6 produced 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. For low-end grunt, the optional LWN 2.8-liter Duramax inline-four turbodiesel delivered 186 horsepower and a stout 369 pound-feet of torque at just 2,000 rpm.
The V6 utilized an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the diesel paired with a six-speed unit. Both sent power through a sophisticated four-wheel-drive system featuring class-exclusive electronic locking front and rear differentials, a 3.5-inch wider track, and a 2-inch factory suspension lift.
Though GM did not limit production numbers, clean examples remain highly sought after by enthusiast drivers today. This truck effectively revived Chevrolet's historic ZR2 off-road moniker, filling the void left by the S-10 ZR2 and paving the way for the redesigned, third-generation 2023 model.
