The 2017-2021 Honda Civic Type R FK8 redefined front-wheel drive by setting a 7:43.80 lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. This run proved that a practical hatchback could outpace dedicated sports cars on the world's most demanding track while remaining a highly usable daily driver.
Powering the FK8 is the K20C1 engine, a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four featuring Honda's VTEC variable valve timing. This direct-injected powerplant produces 306 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 295 pound-feet of torque from 2,500 rpm, delivering linear, relentless acceleration across the rev range.
To manage this power, Honda utilized a six-speed manual transmission paired with a helical limited-slip differential. A clever dual-axis strut front suspension virtually eliminates torque steer, while three-mode adaptive dampers provide flat cornering on track and compliant ride quality on the street.
Built at Honda's Swindon plant in the UK, with roughly 48,000 units produced globally, the FK8 remains highly coveted by drivers. It succeeded the Euro-only FK2 generation and was replaced by the FL5 in 2023, securing its place as a high-water mark for analog, driver-focused hot hatches.
