The 2015-2016 Porsche Cayman GT4 981 set a benchmark for mid-engine sports cars by lapping the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7 minutes and 40 seconds. It became famous for delivering unprecedented chassis balance and steering precision, proving that a mid-engine platform could rival the 911 on track.

Power comes from the MA1.23 engine, a naturally aspirated 3.8-liter flat-six mounted longitudinally in a mid-engine layout. Derived from the 911 Carrera S, this power unit generates 385 horsepower at 7,400 rpm and 310 lb-ft of torque, which peaks across a broad band from 4,750 to 6,000 rpm.

To maximize track agility, the rear-wheel-drive GT4 utilizes a six-speed manual transmission paired with a mechanical limited-slip differential. The chassis features front suspension components from the 991.1 GT3, offering adjustable ride height, camber, and toe for precise wheel control.

With roughly 6,200 units produced globally, the 981 maintains strong residual value among collectors and active track drivers. Having no direct predecessor, this inaugural model sat above the Cayman GTS in the range, and was eventually replaced by the 4.0-liter 718 Cayman GT4.
