The 2011-2015 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG represents a landmark achievement as the first road car designed entirely from scratch by AMG. Renowned for its distinctive, upward-swinging gullwing doors, this supercar combined retro aesthetics with a rigid aluminum spaceframe to dominate the high-performance grand touring market.
At its heart lies the M159 engine, a front-mid-mounted, naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8. This dry-sump powerplant generates 563 horsepower at 6,800 rpm and 479 pound-feet of torque at 4,750 rpm. It remains celebrated as one of the most powerful free-breathing production V8 engines ever constructed.
The chassis features an aluminum spaceframe paired with double-wishbone suspension. Power is sent rearward via a carbon-fiber driveshaft inside a torque tube to a seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle. This setup yields a 47:53 front-to-rear weight distribution, optimizing high-speed stability and cornering.
With roughly 10,000 units produced globally, the car is a coveted modern classic. It effectively replaced the complex Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren and was later succeeded by the more compact Mercedes-AMG GT. Today, collectors prize its mechanical purity and its status as a peak naturally aspirated V8.
