The 2010-2015 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG revived the dramatic gullwing doors of the 1950s 300SL, but its true achievement was being the first road car designed entirely from scratch by AMG. It delivered supercar performance with daily usability, instantly redefining the modern grand touring class.
At its heart lies the M159, a dry-sump, naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 engine. This front-mid-mounted powerplant produces 563 horsepower at 6,800 rpm and 479 lb-ft of torque at 4,750 rpm. It remains one of the highest-output naturally aspirated production V8 engines ever built.
An aluminum spaceframe chassis pairs with a rear-mounted seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle, linked by a carbon-fiber driveshaft inside a rigid torque tube. Double-wishbone suspension at all corners completes this layout, providing an optimal 47:53 weight distribution and superb high-speed stability.
With just over 10,000 units produced globally, the SLS is highly coveted by collectors today. It served as the direct successor to the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren and was later replaced by the smaller, twin-turbocharged Mercedes-AMG GT, cementing its place as a unique high-water mark for the brand.
