The 2006-2016 Yamaha YZF-R6 dominated the supersport class with a track-focused design that prioritized high-rpm power over street usability. It became the first production motorcycle to feature a chip-controlled throttle, helping it secure numerous WorldSSP titles and setting a true 16,000 rpm redline.
Powering the machine is the J515E engine, a 599cc liquid-cooled inline-four. It utilizes titanium valves and dual injectors per cylinder to produce 127 horsepower at 14,500 rpm and 48.5 lb-ft of torque at 10,500 rpm. This high-compression unit features a 13.1:1 ratio for optimal thermal efficiency.
The chassis centers on a Deltabox aluminum frame paired with a magnesium subframe to reduce weight. Suspension consists of fully adjustable 41mm KYB inverted front forks and a rear monoshock. Power reaches the rear wheel via a six-speed transmission with a slipper clutch, ensuring corner entry stability.
This generation replaced the 2003-2005 R6 and was succeeded by the redesigned 2017 model. With tens of thousands sold globally, it remains highly sought after by racers and track-day enthusiasts today. Its status as a pure mechanical analog machine cements its value on the used market.
