The 2003-2012 Mazda RX-8 conquered handling benchmarks of its era by pairing an incredibly low polar moment of inertia with a near-perfect 50:50 weight balance. Its unique four-seat, freestyle-door configuration proved that a pure sports car could be genuinely practical, offering steering response and chassis feedback that rivaled exotic supercars.

At the heart of the car lies the 13B-MSP Renesis engine, a naturally aspirated 1.3-liter two-rotor Wankel rotary. In high-power manual trim, this compact powerplant produces 232 horsepower at a screaming 8,500 rpm and 159 pound-feet of torque at 5,500 rpm. Its side-exhaust port design improved emissions and fuel efficiency over its turbocharged predecessors.

This rotary engine is mounted behind the front axle line, creating a front-midship layout. The double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension yield flat cornering, rapid transient responses, and an incredibly communicative, neutral chassis.

Mazda produced approximately 192,000 units globally before ending production. Succeeding the twin-turbocharged FD RX-7, it became the final production rotary-powered passenger car.
