The 2003-2006 Chevrolet Silverado SS pioneered the modern high-performance sport truck formula by combining full-size utility with an advanced, road-biased all-wheel-drive system. It dominated its era by offering unmatched launch traction and surefooted, all-weather street performance.
Under the hood sits the high-output LQ9 version of GM’s Vortec 6000 engine. This iron-block, aluminum-head 6.0-liter V8 features a 10.1:1 compression ratio to generate 345 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 380 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, delivering a flat, linear power band built for heavy hauling.
Power travels through a 4L65-E four-speed automatic transmission to a full-time, single-speed viscous-coupling transfer case. Supported by the Z60 sport suspension, torsion bars, and monotube shocks, this setup lowers the ride height and rides on 20-inch wheels, optimizing flat, neutral cornering.
With roughly 28,000 units built, the SS remains a highly prized collectible today. It succeeded the 1990-1993 454 SS as Chevrolet's premier performance truck, introducing sophisticated all-wheel-drive grip to the market before giving way to the GMT900-generation models in 2007.
