The 2000-2005 Toyota Celica GT-S dominated the sport compact market by delivering over 100 horsepower per liter without forced induction. This front-wheel-drive coupe offered supercar-level specific output and an 8,300 rpm redline, making it a highly sought-after, high-revving enthusiast's car.
At the heart of the GT-S is the Yamaha-co-developed 2ZZ-GE engine. This 1.8-liter, all-aluminum inline-four utilizes VVTL-i technology to alter valve lift at 6,000 rpm. It produces 180 horsepower at 7,600 rpm and 130 lb-ft of torque at 6,800 rpm, delivering a dramatic power surge near its limit.
Power goes to the front wheels through a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission designed to keep the engine in its narrow powerband. The chassis features MacPherson struts up front and a double-wishbone rear suspension. Weighing just 2,500 pounds, it excels at sharp, flat cornering.
With over 130,000 seventh-generation units sold in the US, the GT-S remains a highly prized modern classic for budget-minded track drivers. It replaced the heavier sixth-generation Celica and, when retired in 2005, marked the official end of the Celica nameplate with no direct successor.
