The 1999-2000 Honda Civic Si defined the golden era of sport compact performance by delivering an astonishing 100 horsepower per liter without turbocharging. This high-revving coupe became the benchmark for affordable front-wheel-drive dynamics, offering an 8,000-rpm redline that challenged exotics.
Under the hood sits the B16A2, a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated inline-four engine featuring Honda's VTEC variable valve timing. This powerplant produces 160 horsepower at 7,600 rpm and 111 lb-ft of torque at 7,000 rpm, engaging its aggressive camshaft profile at 5,600 rpm for a dramatic surge.
Power reaches the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. The EM1 chassis utilizes a sophisticated four-wheel double-wishbone suspension, upgraded with stiffer springs, dampers, and a front strut brace. This setup delivers precise, neutral handling and exceptional cornering agility.
With approximately 30,000 units built, pristine examples are highly prized by collectors today. This coupe succeeded the fifth-generation Civic Si hatchback, returning the performance badge to the US market after a four-year hiatus, and was eventually replaced by the 2002 EP3 hatchback.
