Built solely to homologate the brand's dominant off-road racer, the 1997-1999 Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution conquered the grueling Dakar Rally, securing an unprecedented one-two-three sweep in 1998. This road-legal SUV offered unmatched high-speed desert-running capability right off the showroom floor.

Under the dual-scooped aluminum hood sits the 6G74 engine, a 3.5-liter 24-valve V6 featuring MIVEC variable valve timing. This naturally aspirated powerplant produces 276 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 257 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm, delivering a broad, linear powerband suited for loose terrain.

Power flows via a five-speed manual or INVECS-II automatic and Super Select 4WD-II system with front and rear Torsen differentials. The unique double-wishbone front and multi-link rear independent suspension allows high-speed stability and massive wheel travel over punishing desert terrain.

Mitsubishi built approximately 2,500 units to meet FIA T2 homologation rules. Highly prized by global collectors today, it replaced the standard second-generation Pajero rally entries. Because Dakar regulations shifted, this model remains a unique, one-generation special with no direct successor.
