The 1993-1997 Honda Del Sol pioneered open-air utility with a rigid targa top design featuring a unique, power-retractable vertical rear window. This layout eliminated wind buffeting and cabin turbulence better than contemporary convertibles while maintaining structural rigidity.

Top-trim VTEC models feature the B16A3 (later B16A2) engine, a 1.6-liter dual-overhead-cam inline-four. This naturally aspirated powerplant produces 160 horsepower at 7,600 rpm and 111 pound-feet of torque at 7,000 rpm, delivering a specific output of 100 horsepower per liter with an 8,200-rpm redline.

Built on a front-wheel-drive chassis, the vehicle utilizes a four-wheel double-wishbone suspension with front and rear stabilizer bars. Paired with a close-ratio five-speed manual transmission, this lightweight setup provides high lateral grip, sharp turn-in, and predictable cornering balance.

Honda sold roughly 75,000 units in the United States. Replacing the Civic CRX and eventually succeeded spiritually by the S2000 roadster, the car has seen a surge in collector demand. Unmodified, top-trim VTEC examples are highly sought after today for their mechanical purity and rarity.
