Buyers chose between two main Vortec V8 engines. The L31 5.7-liter small-block V8 produced 250 horsepower and 335 lb-ft of torque. For maximum capability, the heavy-duty L29 7.4-liter big-block V8 delivered 290 horsepower and a massive 410 lb-ft of torque, utilizing sequential fuel injection.

Built on the GMT400 platform, it featured an independent front suspension and a leaf-sprung solid rear axle.
