The 1992-1999 Chevrolet Suburban dominated the utility market by masterfully combining a 10,000-pound towing capacity with room for nine passengers. This GMT400-generation rig became the ultimate heavy-duty hauler, offering a cavernous 149.5 cubic feet of cargo space that no rival could match.

Buyers chose between two main Vortec V8 engines. The L31 5.7-liter small-block V8 produced 250 horsepower and 335 lb-ft of torque. For maximum capability, the heavy-duty L29 7.4-liter big-block V8 delivered 290 horsepower and a massive 410 lb-ft of torque, utilizing sequential fuel injection.

Built on the GMT400 platform, it featured an independent front suspension and a leaf-sprung solid rear axle. Power routed through either a 4L60-E or heavy-duty 4L80-E four-speed automatic transmission. This robust setup, paired with Insta-Trac four-wheel drive, ensured superb highway towing stability.

Replacing the long-running R/V square-body, this generation sold over 800,000 units. Today, it is highly prized by collectors and overlanders for its reliability and easy maintenance, before the GMT800 platform replaced it in 2000. It remains the high-water mark for analog utility.
