The 1992-1993 GMC Typhoon revolutionized performance by delivering sports-car-shaming acceleration in a utility body. Rocketing from zero to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds, this high-performance machine outran contemporary Ferraris in wet conditions, establishing itself as the quickest production SUV of its era.

Under the hood sits the LB4 4.3-liter turbocharged V6 engine. Utilizing a Mitsubishi TD06-17C turbo and a liquid-to-air intercooler, this iron-block powerplant generates 280 horsepower at 4,400 rpm and 360 pound-feet of torque at 3,600 rpm, fed through a multi-port fuel injection system.

Power is managed by a 4L60 four-speed automatic transmission paired with a BorgWarner 4472 transfer case. This all-wheel-drive system splits torque 35 percent front and 65 percent rear. Combined with a self-leveling rear air suspension, the setup excels at maximizing straight-line launches and wet grip.

GMC produced just 4,697 Typhoons over its two-year run, making it a highly prized modern classic today. It effectively succeeded the Syclone pickup in GMC's performance hierarchy, but left no direct successor when production ended, cementing its status as a unique peak in sport-utility history.
