The 1987-1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ revolutionized the compact 4x4 market by introducing civilized road manners to a rugged open-top utility vehicle. Distinguished by its unique square headlights, the YJ offered unprecedented stability via a wider track, making it the era's premier daily-driven off-roader.

Under the hood, the coveted powerplant is the 4.0-liter High Output inline-six engine, code-named MX. This fuel-injected powerhouse produces 180 horsepower and 220 pound-feet of torque. It replaced the 4.2-liter carbureted motor, providing the low-end grunt essential for crawling over obstacles.

The chassis utilizes a leaf-spring suspension paired with track bars to reduce body roll. Power flows through an AX15 five-speed manual transmission to a Command-Trac NP231 transfer case and Dana axles. This robust, mechanical setup makes the YJ exceptionally durable and highly capable on rugged terrain.

With 685,071 units produced, the YJ bridged the gap between utility and comfort. Replacing the CJ-7 and eventually succeeded by the coil-sprung TJ, the YJ is highly prized by collectors today as the final leaf-sprung Wrangler, offering a pure, analog driving experience that is easy to modify.
