Debuting as the fastest production sedan in the world, the 1985-1988 BMW M5 E28 redefined performance by blending supercar speed with four-door utility. Hand-built by the Motorsport division, it established the sport sedan segment, offering a 153-mph top speed that left contemporary sports cars behind.

At its heart lies the M88/3 powerplant, a 3.5-liter, dual-overhead-cam inline-six derived from the M1 supercar. European models deliver 282 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque through individual throttle bodies. North American units use the S38 variant, producing 256 horsepower.

Power goes to the rear wheels via a Getrag 280 five-speed manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential. The chassis features upgraded Bilstein dampers, stiffer anti-roll bars, and larger four-piston front brakes. This cohesive setup delivers neutral, highly predictable handling at high speeds.

With only 2,191 units hand-assembled globally, this first-generation M5 is highly prized by collectors today. Replacing the E12 M535i as the brand's flagship performance sedan, it established a new template before making way for the E34 M5 in 1989, securing its place as the original executive express.
