The 1984-1990 Ford Bronco II pioneered the American compact SUV market, offering serious off-road capability in a highly maneuverable, 94-inch wheelbase package. It excelled on tight, technical trails where full-size rigs struggled, establishing a dedicated cult following for its nimble agility.

Power initially came from a carbureted 2.8-liter Cologne V6, but 1986 brought the fuel-injected 2.9-liter Cologne V6. This overhead-valve, 60-degree engine produced 140 horsepower at 4,600 rpm and 170 pound-feet of torque at 2,600 rpm, providing a strong power-to-weight ratio for the light utility.

Built on a rugged body-on-frame chassis shared with the Ranger, it utilized Ford's Twin-Traction Beam independent front suspension and a solid rear axle. Paired with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic, the part-time four-wheel-drive system made it exceptionally capable in deep mud and snow.

Replacing no direct predecessor as a fresh compact entry, it was eventually succeeded by the four-door Explorer. Ford built over 700,000 units during its seven-year run. Today, survivors are highly prized by collectors and off-roaders seeking a mechanical, retro-styled trail rig.
