The 1984-1988 Toyota Hilux forged a reputation for near-indestructibility that remains unmatched in the compact utility class. Renowned for surviving extreme physical abuse, this resilient workhorse combined a boxed steel frame with high ground clearance to dominate global off-road markets.
Under the hood, the defining powerplant is the 2.4-liter 22R-E inline-four. This naturally aspirated, single overhead cam engine features electronic fuel injection, producing 112 horsepower at 4,600 rpm and 142 lb-ft of torque at 3,400 rpm. It is celebrated for its timing-chain durability.
Built on a steel ladder chassis, 4WD models utilize a five-speed manual transmission paired with a dual-range transfer case. Pre-1986 models feature rugged solid front and rear axles on leaf springs, providing superb wheel articulation and durability for demanding rock-crawling duties.
Replaced by the fifth-generation in late 1988, this fourth-gen Hilux succeeded the third-gen model. Today, clean examples command premium prices among collectors and off-roaders. With global production in the hundreds of thousands, it remains a high-water mark for mechanical reliability.
