The 1983-1992 Ford Ranger dominated the compact truck market by offering genuine work-truck utility in a scaled-down package. It became America's best-selling compact pickup by 1987, prized by enthusiasts for its rugged, miniature F-150 construction and class-leading payload capacities.

Top-tier models featured the 4.0-liter Cologne V6 engine. This longitudinal, pushrod iron-block powerplant produced 160 horsepower at 4,200 rpm and 225 pound-feet of torque at 2,500 rpm. It provided the small truck with effortless low-end grunt and a highly durable mechanical design.

Underneath, the Ranger utilized Ford's Twin-I-Beam front suspension on 2WD models and a Twin-Traction Beam setup on 4WD variants. Paired with a Mazda-sourced M5OD five-speed manual transmission and a solid rear axle, this layout delivered exceptional off-road durability and high articulation.

Ford built over 2.6 million first-generation Rangers. Today, they are prized budget classics, especially in rust-free four-wheel-drive configurations. This generation successfully replaced the Mazda-built Ford Courier and was ultimately succeeded by the redesigned 1993 model.
