The 1983-1987 Toyota Corolla GT-S AE86 remains the definitive lightweight rear-wheel-drive platform of its era, dominating production-car rallying and establishing modern drifting. Weighing under 2,300 pounds, its near-perfect front-to-rear balance delivers unmatched throttle-steer response.
Propulsion comes from the 4A-GE engine, a 1.6-liter, dual-overhead-cam, 16-valve inline-four. Featuring Toyota's T-VIS variable intake system, it produces 112 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 97 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 rpm, revving safely to a 7,500-rpm redline with crisp, immediate throttle response.
The chassis utilizes MacPherson struts up front and a five-link live axle with coil springs at the rear. Power goes to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission and a standard limited-slip differential. This setup makes the car exceptionally controllable during high-angle cornering.
Toyota imported roughly 22,000 GT-S units to North America. Today, clean examples command premium collector prices. This generation replaced the TE71 series, marking the final rear-wheel-drive Corolla sport model before the front-wheel-drive AE92 platform succeeded it for the 1988 model year.
