The Audi Ur-quattro, produced from 1980 to 1991, redefined performance driving by proving that permanent all-wheel drive belonged on tarmac, not just off-road. It dominated the World Rally Championship, capturing two manufacturers' titles and forever changing how high-performance road cars were built.

Under the hood, the WR-code engine set the standard. This 2,144 cc turbocharged inline-five layout featured a single overhead camshaft and ten valves. It produced 197 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 210 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 rpm, delivering a distinctive, off-beat five-cylinder growl.

Beneath the steel unibody, independent MacPherson struts front and rear controlled body roll. Power reached all four wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox and a permanent Quattro drivetrain featuring manually lockable center and rear differentials, providing superb grip in low-traction conditions.

With just 11,452 units produced worldwide, the Ur-quattro is highly prized by collectors today. It had no direct predecessor, effectively elevating the standard Audi Coupe to flagship status, and was eventually succeeded by the S2 Coupe, cementing its place as a pivotal ancestor.
