The 1978-1979 Dodge Little Red Express shocked the automotive world by becoming the fastest-accelerating American production vehicle from zero to 100 mph, as tested by Car and Driver. By exploiting a federal emissions loophole, this utility vehicle outperformed the era's premier sports cars.
Under the hood sat a modified EH1-code 360 cubic-inch (5.9-liter) V8 engine. This small-block powerplant utilized a four-barrel carburetor, a police-spec camshaft, and 360 heads to produce 225 net horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, exhaling through dual vertical chrome exhaust stacks.
Built on the short-wheelbase D150 Utiline chassis, the truck sent power to the rear wheels via a modified A727 LoadFlite three-speed automatic transmission and a 3.55:1 Sure Grip differential. This rigid rear suspension and heavy-duty drivetrain excelled at straight-line drag strip launches.
Dodge produced 7,306 units over the two-year run, making surviving examples highly prized by modern collectors. Within the brand's performance lineage, this model succeeded the Warlock in the "Adult Toys" lineup and was spiritually replaced a decade later by the 1989 Shelby Dakota.
