The 1972-1976 Ford Gran Torino defined the pre-smog intermediate class, combining NASCAR-honed aerodynamics with immense sales success. Its redesigned body achieved a drag-reducing profile that David Pearson drove to 11 victories in 1973, proving its high-speed stability on the superspeedways.
Under the long hood, the optional Q-code 351-cubic-inch Cleveland V8 featured four-barrel carburetion and open-chamber heads. This overhead-valve powerplant produced 248 net horsepower at 5,400 rpm and 290 lb-ft of torque, delivering strong mid-range acceleration despite tightening emissions.
Ford switched to robust body-on-frame construction with a torque-resistant perimeter frame. Paired with a three-speed SelectShift automatic and a coil-sprung solid rear axle, this rear-wheel-drive setup isolated road harshness, creating an exceptionally quiet and stable high-speed cruiser.
With over 1.6 million units built, this generation replaced the 1971 Torino and was succeeded by the 1977 LTD II. Today, survivors are prized by collectors for their period-correct styling, with well-preserved Q-code fastbacks and formal coupes commanding premium prices at enthusiast auctions.
