The 1970-1973 Plymouth Duster 340 dominated the budget muscle car market by offering unmatched performance per dollar. Packing a high-output small-block V8 into a lightweight fastback body, it delivered a power-to-weight ratio that humiliated far more expensive big-block competitors on the drag strip.

Power came from the high-revving LA-series 340-cubic-inch OHV V8 engine. In its optimal 1970 configuration, this iron-block powerplant utilized a 10.5:1 compression ratio and a four-barrel Carter carburetor to produce 275 gross horsepower and 340 pound-feet of torque at 3,200 rpm.

Built on Chrysler's compact A-body chassis, the Duster utilized independent front torsion bars and rear leaf springs. Power reached the rear wheels via an A833 four-speed manual or a TorqueFlite three-speed automatic, spinning an 8.75-inch differential. This setup excelled at straight-line traction.

Plymouth built 69,115 Duster 340s over its four-year run. Today, collectors prize them as accessible, highly drivable muscle cars. The model filled the compact performance niche left when the Barracuda moved to the E-body platform, and was replaced by the Duster 360 in 1974.
