The 1970-1972 Buick GSX defined the peak of the muscle car era by delivering 510 pound-feet of torque, an American production car record that stood for over two decades. This high-performance package transformed Buick's luxury image into a street-clearing force built for absolute straight-line dominance.

Under the hood, the optional Stage 1 big-block 455-cubic-inch OHV V8 engine delivered an underrated 360 gross horsepower at 4,600 rpm. Its defining specification was the massive 510 pound-feet of torque peaking at just 2,800 rpm, fed by a Rochester Quadrajet four-barrel carburetor on a dual-plane intake.

Built on GM’s A-body chassis, the GSX used the F41 heavy-duty suspension with thick sway bars and stiff springs to control body roll. Power reached the rear wheels via a Muncie M21 four-speed manual or TH400 automatic, driving a Positraction rear axle to maximize straight-line acceleration.

With only 846 units produced over its three-year run, the GSX is highly prized by collectors today. Replacing the GS 400 as Buick's peak performance offering, it was ultimately succeeded by the downsized Century GS in 1973 after federal emissions regulations ended the high-compression V8 era.
