The 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona, produced only for the 1969 model year, became the first NASCAR vehicle to break the 200 mph barrier. Engineered specifically for superspeedway dominance, its sheet-metal nose cone and 23-inch tall rear stabilizer wing reduced the drag coefficient to an unprecedented 0.28.

Buyers chose between two overhead-valve V8 engines: the standard 440-cubic-inch Magnum or the optional 426-cubic-inch Hemi. The Hemi variant featured hemispherical combustion chambers, dual four-barrel Carter carburetors, and a 10.25:1 compression ratio, producing 425 horsepower and 490 pound-feet of torque.

Built on Chrysler's B-body platform, the Daytona utilized heavy-duty front torsion bars and rear leaf springs to manage high-speed aerodynamic loads. Power reached the rear wheels via an A833 four-speed manual or an A727 automatic, routed to a Dana 60 axle, providing exceptional high-speed stability.

Dodge built just 503 units to meet NASCAR homologation rules, making them highly prized by modern collectors. This specialized aero-car replaced the unsuccessful Charger 500 in Dodge's racing lineup, and its design directly inspired the Plymouth Superbird that succeeded it for the 1970 season.
