The 1968-1970 Dodge Charger R/T defined the muscle car aesthetic with its double-diamond Coke-bottle profile and hidden-headlight grille. Built for pure street performance, this platform prioritized aggressive styling and high-velocity stability, establishing it as a muscle car benchmark.
Standard R/T power came from the 440-cubic-inch Magnum V8 engine. This overhead-valve, 7.2-liter block utilized a four-barrel carburetor to produce 375 horsepower at 4,600 rpm and 480 pound-feet of torque at 3,200 rpm. The optional 426 Hemi V8 raised output to a rated 425 horsepower.
The B-body chassis utilized unibody construction, heavy-duty front torsion bars, and rear leaf springs. Power reached the rear wheels via a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic or a four-speed manual transmission. This rigid setup excelled at straight-line acceleration and managing high torque.
Dodge produced approximately 47,000 Charger R/T models during this three-year run. Today, they command premium prices at auction. This second-generation platform replaced the fastback 1966-1967 models and was succeeded by the redesigned, fuselage-styled third-generation Charger in 1971.
