The 1963-1971 Mini Cooper S redefined motorsport by winning the Monte Carlo Rally three times against far more powerful machinery. This small vehicle secured its reputation through unmatched agility, proving that lightweight front-wheel-drive packaging could dominate international rallying.

Power comes from a transversely mounted BMC A-Series inline-four engine. The definitive 1,275 cc version features twin SU HS2 carburetors, producing 76 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 79 pound-feet of torque at 3,000 rpm. This compact overhead-valve powerplant drives the front wheels via an in-sump gearbox.

The chassis utilizes a space-saving monocoque with ten-inch wheels pushed to the absolute corners. Suspension is handled by compact rubber cones, or later Hydrolastic displacers, paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. This low-slung configuration delivers razor-sharp, neutral handling through tight corners.

With around 27,500 units built across three iterations, the Cooper S is now a highly prized collector car. It succeeded the standard 997cc Cooper and was eventually replaced by the 1275 GT. Today, original survival cars and verified rally-spec builds command premium prices from driving enthusiasts.
