The 1972-1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 redefined sports car aerodynamics as the first production road car to feature a rear spoiler. Designed to homologate Porsche’s racer for Group 4 competition, this lightweight special offered unprecedented high-speed stability and became the benchmark for track-focused road cars.

Power comes from the Type 911/83 engine, an air-cooled 2.7-liter flat-six utilizing Bosch mechanical fuel injection and Nikasil-coated cylinder bores. This 2,687 cc powerplant produces 210 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 188 lb-ft of torque at 5,100 rpm, delivering immediate throttle response across the rev range.

Its rear-wheel-drive chassis employs a five-speed Type 915 manual transmission. The suspension features front MacPherson struts and rear semi-trailing arms with torsion bars, stiffened anti-roll bars, and Bilstein dampers. This setup, paired with wider rear Fuchs wheels, ensures precise, communicative cornering.

Porsche built 1,580 units, far exceeding the 500-car homologation requirement. Today, it is a blue-chip collectible prized for its pure mechanical connection. Replacing the 2.4S as the brand's flagship performance model, it paved the way for the G-series Carrera RS 3.0 that succeeded it for 1974.
