The 1954-1963 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing secured its place in automotive history as the world's fastest production car, capable of reaching 163 mph. It was the first production car to utilize gasoline direct injection, a technology that provided unprecedented efficiency and high-speed performance.

Under the hood lies the M198 engine, a 3.0-liter (2,996 cc) overhead-cam inline-six tilted at a 45-degree angle to clear the low bonnet line. Equipped with Bosch mechanical fuel injection, this powerplant generates 215 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 203 pound-feet of torque at 4,600 rpm.

A lightweight, 182-pound tubular steel spaceframe chassis provides immense rigidity but dictates the high sills. Power goes to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox. Independent front double wishbones and a rear swing-axle suspension deliver exceptional high-speed stability.

Mercedes-Benz built 1,400 Gullwing coupes, which remain highly prized by collectors today. This model evolved from the 1952 W194 sports racing car and established the brand's SL heritage. Production ended in 1963 when the W113 "Pagoda" SL series replaced the 300SL platform.
